At the wonders of nature

Last week I had the honor of sponsoring an Environmental Delegate from the Ukraine. At first we struggled a bit with communication but with the use of a translation app (and a little bit of patience), we always managed to understand each other and soon we got into a groove. She had never been kayaking before and was eager to go but the weather had been uncooperative for most of the week. Finally on her last morning we got up before dawn to calm weather and launched in time to watch the sun rise on the bayou. She was a natural at paddling but what I loved most was that we would both stop and silently take in the beauty of the morning. No words were needed.

    What a wonderful and unforgettable experience for your guest. As a sea kayaker I can understand how you both must have felt at sunup.

    It was. And she she knew she had to leave to go home that afternoon and I don’t think she or any of the delegates wanted their visit to end. That morning was a time of reflection for both of us. She was an age that she could have been my daughter and I felt very protective of her.

    Paddling a 19feet long kayak with a 1 inch freeboard out of sight of the shore certainly lifts the adrenalin level.
