Widow dressed in black

Gossamer egg case

Red hourglass tracking time
Cobweb cradling future

Note: She is in fact a Brown Widow. Her venom is just as deadly as a Black Widow but her potential delivery is not. I went with the word “black” above because most people are more familiar with her cousin species and well, poetic license. Photo taken in a storm drain.

I am a scientist by trade and artist by soul. My creative outlet used to be dancing but due to injuries and age, I must now find another path. I am hoping my writing, poetry and photography can be this new path. Awards: While I am grateful and honored for the numerous nominations, I don’t have time to respond to them with the attention they deserve, so for the most part, I am an award free blog. 2. Very nice! I’m not a big fan of spiders but beautiful nonetheless.

  3. I love how the black background echoes the feeling of cosmos.

  4. Thank you Erich. I am not a fan of things that could kill me and I especially don’t like surprises. This young lady was between us and a water sample so unfortunately she had to move along.

  5. Thank you. That was a happy accident that I made full use of. The moon looking object is a sample container full of water placed there for testing.

  6. I’m not phobic but pretty sure I would’ve walked off quickly. Lol

  7. Oh, I have destroyed a shower curtain trying to avoid a rather large, hairy specimen (by that I mean spider) that was hiding in the tub.

  8. Haha! Thanks for the clarification!

  11. Yes she does. I found that spider and her egg case beautiful.

  13. Thanks for the backstory and Wikipedia link as well as the gorgeous photo and apt poetry.

The photo would make a good submission to next year’s Weather Channel contest (or to National Wildlife’s annual photo contest).

  15. Real and surreal in the same moment — such a fantastic photo! And the excellent poem in an hourglass shape — truly impressive!

  16. Good job seeing with fresh eyes 🙂 I wouldn’t have thought ‘that’s a cup’ if you hadn’t said so.

  17. Nice call on the brown vs black discernment. Most people (including me) would have seen the hour glass and just “known” that was a black widow. Also love the “cosmos” image-word connection and “gossamer” usage, and “Cradling future”. Densely packed, as always DE!

  18. A tense moment captured in very well taken photo and verse. Ah those widows, brown or black or blond…I deserve every touch of venom ever received by any….

  21. This is a wonderful poem that captures “another universe.” Be sure to check out what’s happening at the West Florida Literary Federation during the Foo Foo Festival in Pensacola. Between November 10 and 13, they are hosting two incredible NYC poets at readings, workshops, and a brunch and interview with the poets. Haiku and other forms will be featured in the workshops. Very reasonable registration. Go here for more info: https://sites.google.com/site/wflfonline/foo-foo-registration

    Your site is just beautiful!
