Winter’s stillness
The only sound, my heartbeat
And the click of the shutter

  4. I find myself coming back to this post, not only for the beauty in the rendering but also for the contrast: strength and vulnerability.

Winter is the season of Bare, of being exposed to the elements in stark nakedness. It is, metaphorically speaking, the time during which we must stand strongest, while stripped of our protections.

The way you describe the silence reminds me of the way trees stand flocked in December, quietly and uncomplainingly buffeted by winds and quilted in snow.

To me, winter is a time for reflection, for introspection, for standing still in the cold air and finding peace, alone, there.

I wish that for you, this season.

On the heels of “Spring” this piece reads less like a denouement than a turning point…

It is in autumn, I think, that we reach our resolutions. The trees let go their leaves so gracefully. It is a lesson we can all stand to learn. 🙂

  6. Hi Christy,

I think I can hear both your heartbeat and the click of your shutter. Such a beautiful, powerful, breathtaking image, I gasp just looking at it 🙂

  7. I absolutely love this! I have completely forgotten that seasons exists her in Thailand and I heard from back home that the first snow fell today. Can’t say I particularly miss it, but this hiaku definitely reminded me of the stillness of winter, regardless.

  12. This is the kind of haiku I really like, ultra-sharp, detailed, focusing on that tiny moment, or two, and using sound as well as imagery. A beauty.

  13. A haiku moment from your own experience caught so well in the haiku and the photo … that “click of the shutter” must have been loud in that silent wintery forest … very nice …

  14. Thank you. Yes, it was amazingly quiet. Surreal and spiritual. It would have been irreverent to make noise.
