I am a scientist by trade and artist by soul. My creative outlet used to be dancing but due to injuries and age, I must now find another path. I am hoping my writing, poetry and photography can be this new path.
Awards: While I am grateful and honored for the numerous nominations, I don’t have time to respond to them with the attention they deserve, so for the most part, I am an award free blog.

Really true and this poem is so lovely and thought provoking. Working in the food service industry has made me realize how TRULY WASTEFUL we are as a species…and it has really made me reconsider how we live and whether the convenience of sandwiches packed ready to order in plastic is really worth it. I throw so much food and packaging away at work and I hate it.

Are you saying trash is an avalanche or that when dirt collapses it is a man made avalanche? I can see why man is to be blamed for pollution. This saddens me, too.
The photo and your words confused me a bit. I welcome your scientific opinions. I will check back. . .

Trash as an avalanche. An avalanche of garbage. For numerous and complicated reasons I was not able to get a picture of a giant landfill mountain which is what I wanted and pictured in my mind. I am not criticizing the trash industry. It is necessary and I recognize myself as part of the problem too. But since I work closely with landfills I see first hand the sheer volume of trash that humans create and recognize we have to become a more sustainable society.

Thank you. As you can see from previous comments I wanted a large landfill but couldn’t access. Sentiment is the same, we are going to be smothered in an avalanche of garbage if we don’t change our behavior.

An excellent tanka, highlighting an enormous issue. Not everyone realises that recycling is only a start. We have to reduce the use of packaging, and stop buying things which we won’t use.
Ha! I just can’t resist a little bit of green politics now and again!

Avalanche, flood, hailstones, tsunami… this poem (and it’s insight) could have worked equally well with any natural disaster.
Alas, this disaster is man-made.

Thank you for sharing. Yes, it is a sad reality. We find a lot of sea turtles suffer from plastic ingestion and tangling too.

I hope that a combination of education (on waste reduction), awareness and technology will result in an economic way to handle waste in our future. We need to change our habits quickly though.
